I’ve found that I cannot put the past down, so instead I will carry it with me. Greeting it as an old friend instead of a burden. I try to work with the past as a place of possibility, something fluid instead of static, where new narratives can be created and interwoven. It starts with an image from one of my archives, which I then reinterpret and contrast with either fragments from other photographs or imagined scenes, as a way of exploring a range of political and cultural themes. Through this, I try to understand the relationship between a societal ‘other’ and their own fragmented history, primarily by drawing upon personal cultural experiences and examining the power that lies behind having control over your own narrative.
